The Importance of Packaging for Medicines

Why are medicine containers needed? Have you asked yourself?

If you think about it for just a second, it’s easy to realize that its relevance is indisputable.

Although at first glance it may seem that its main function is that of simple containers, nothing is further from the truth.

Medicine containers are much more.

A little history

The development of our company is inextricably linked with the history of what is known today as the Medication Delivery Ontario, and it is that our journey began in 1962 with a production focused on this type of container.

The field of manufacturing and distribution of medicines has gone through different transformations. Pharmacies were located at the beginning, preparing special formulas for specific consumption. Next came the time when we worked in small laboratories, in our early days. And, finally, increasingly larger pharmaceutical companies have been entering the scene that today form a large industry.

Why are medicine containers so important?

Our company has worked for decades in packaging and the manufacture of plastic containers. And our position, in direct contact, has helped us to understand the role of medicine packaging from a comprehensive perspective.

How about we start at the beginning?

The first thing is to understand that there are especially sensitive elements (products for large food, phytosanitary and cosmetic consumption) whose packaging must be carried out following very strict protocols that the law is responsible for regulating.

They are so important that they have become an essential part of the health system, for both doctors and patients. This is because they play a leading role in the journey that medicines take from the moment they are created to the moment they are ingested.

Without proper packaging, it is impossible for them to reach the person who needs them with their properties intact. And, consequently, they will not be able to carry out their healing functions.

As we explain below, this is one of the main reasons that support the relevance of packaging for medicines.

Preserves the properties of medicines

Medicines can be altered in terms of their active principles and qualities. It must not be forgotten that atmospheric conditions are potent enemies of the stability of chemical formulas.

For this reason, these containers are manufactured according to very specific instructions. Humidity, temperature, light or dirt can destabilize the characteristics of the materials. So, it is about converting packaging into a containment dam against external agents.

Protect the consumer against misuse of packaging

In medicine, containers serve the same role as significant instruments as they did in the previous utility. In the present case, its role is to be a source of protection for the production and distribution chain. But not so much in relation to factors capable of contaminating their formulas but to interferences of another type.

It is possible that the packaging may be tampered with, be a victim of counterfeiting or misuse. But tracking systems can be incorporated, such as optical reading codes. And anti-counterfeiting mechanisms can also be added.

Then you can define the location of the medicine, find out if the container has been tampered with, etc. And this always works in favor of all those involved.

They serve as dispensers of medication

Often, containers for medicines are used as dosing agents for these substances.

There are many cases in which packaging incorporates utensils that help to accurately measure specific doses. Depending on the format in which the medication is presented, one type or another of dispenser will be adapted.

In our company we produce a wide variety of dosing containers (tubes, spoons, syringes …) in which we include all kinds of presentations. You must take a look at one of our latest additions, a Capsule Dispenser. We are always committed to innovation and quality at the service of our customers.

Guarantee against poisoning

It is necessary to add to the packaging of medicines certain security measures. Special plugs or guarantee rings are just two examples. On the one hand, they fulfill their function as tools to combat possible poisoning. But also, the containers are guaranteed to be inviolable. That is, they have not been opened previously.

As you can see, the uses of medicine containers are very varied.
